What is Anxiety

Everyone experiences worry or stress from time to time. In fact, for many of us, it’s normal to be anxious about things on a regular basis. You might be worried about a move, about your kid’s future, about your future. You might experience anxiety about doing something new or meeting up with a date. The thing is, this anxiety should go away after you navigate the situation, make plans to ensure things go well, or take time to talk it out.

For over 40 million adults, those feelings don’t go away. Instead, feelings of worry, exhaustion, persistent stress, and restless thoughts pervade your daily life. Millions of us experience anxiety attacks so great that it prevents us from doing the things we want to do. Unfortunately, most people with anxiety don’t get help. About 38% of individuals qualifying for an anxiety diagnosis and treatment get help.

About 50% of those are under the age of 25. That means the large percentage of people struggling with anxiety fail to get the help they need. Often, that’s because they don’t see their problems as big enough, worry about not seeing results, worry about what people will think of them – or are too stressed and busy with life to look for help.

Signs & Symptoms of Anxiety

Anxiety disorders break down into multiple specific disorders:

You might notice that depression is on that list. Today, we know that depression and anxiety significantly overlap. Sometimes when you’re feeling persistent anxiety and worry it’s because you’re struggling with depression. And, anxiety can come with symptoms of fatigue, feeling down, losing interest in things, self-isolation, and many other symptoms that people frequently associate with depression.

Most frequently, you’ll see symptoms including:

When Does Anxiety Require Treatment

In general, if you are experiencing anxiety at a point where it interferes with your quality of life and it doesn’t go away in a few weeks, talk to your doctor. You might be surprised by how much early intervention and getting counseling and therapy can help even before anxiety becomes a crippling mental health disorder.

At Stairway Outpatient Center, we offer personalized treatment programs to help our patients cope with and move past anxiety. Our long-term outpatient approach means you get care for as long as you need it – with a program that moves forward based on your results not on how many days you’re in the program.

That all begins with an evaluation and a personalized program.

Acute Anxiety

Acute anxiety is a moment of anxiety that can feel like you’re having a heart attack. Most people feel lightheaded, rapid heartbeat, and chest pains. If you’re experiencing anxiety attacks of this nature, chances are you’re in a very stressed environment, have experienced trauma, or have a severe mental health disorder. Treating acute anxiety means assessing the problem, looking for underlying causes, and building a treatment program that allows you to mitigate the symptoms of acute anxiety and then treat the underlying causes when you have room to do so. At Stairway, that means looking into underlying causes, building a program that supports your needs and adapting it as you move through the program, and looking for treatment that leads to recovery.

Chronic Anxiety

Chronic anxiety is ongoing anxiety and for many patients, it will never go away. Often, it means you have persistent anxiety and worry over a longer period. In some cases, anxiety can go into remission and may vanish for years at a time. If you’re experiencing anxiety as a regular part of life, regularly experience anxiety attacks, and regularly experience significant worry and dread even over normal aspects of life, you may qualify for a chronic anxiety diagnosis. At Stairway, we know that chronic anxiety is still treatable. That’s why we start our assessment out to look for underlying causes, to look for opportunities for qualify of life improvements, and then build a treatment program around managing symptoms, reducing the impact of anxiety, and helping our patients live the best life possible around anxiety. Chronic anxiety often requires ongoing treatment and care and that’s why we offer long-term outpatient treatment as well as follow-up and aftercare.

Outpatient therapy is accessible, affordable, and effective. It gives you access to the treatment you need without requiring you to put a hold on the rest of your life.

Evaluation & Personalization

Every person is unique. The reasons you experience anxiety are also unique. There is no one-size-fits all treatment option for anxiety. Instead, we offer you a careful upfront evaluation, custom anxiety treatment program, and ongoing case management.

Your progression through treatment is based on milestones and not on the number of days you’re with us because we want you to recover, not just check a box. And, we’ll continue personalizing your treatment program to suit your needs as you move through the program.

Individual & Group Therapy

Stairway offers a mix of individual and group therapy so that you benefit from one-on-one time with your therapist as well as from the experiences and insights of your peers. You get daily group sessions where you’ll work on skills to manage anxiety, behavioral therapy, and talking therapy.

We also offer behavioral therapies like EMDR. Plus, with group and family group therapy as complementary treatment, we ensure you have the tools you need to get your anxiety under control.

Holistic Treatment

Anxiety disorders are often impacted by lifestyle, environment, and behavior. You are not a single aspect of yourself. That’s why it’s important to treat every part of you when treating your mental health. At Stairway, we treat you as a whole person. That’s why we offer complementary therapies for holistic therapy. That includes:

Family group therapy

Fitness and nutrition

Art for therapy

12-step support

Transcranial magnetic stimulation

Neurofeedback (neurotherapy)

Help with legal issues

If you’re in poor physical health, struggling with family problems, struggling with legal issues, or otherwise not doing well, it’s harder to focus on treatment and recovery. It’s hard to recover from anxiety when you have things to be anxious about. We will help where we can.

Insurance Coverage for Anxiety Treatment

Your insurance provider will cover anxiety as part of your treatment plan. However, coverage will vary and you’ll still need a doctor’s referral. Contact us and we can help you check if Stairway is covered under your provider’s plan.

Aftercare

Stairway’s treatment program extends as long as you need it. But, once you graduate, we’re still here for you. Our alumni and aftercare programs ensure that you get ongoing support for as long as you need it. Whether that’s quickly moving back into treatment if you need it, ongoing checkups, or follow-ups as you reach graduation milestones, we’re here for you every step of the way.
